Want Stress Relief … Go Sailing!!
If your mind and body cries out for stress relief! If your day starts and ends this way! ......
'You wake at two in the morning, tossing and turning, your mind in over drive. What seems like hours later you fall asleep only to be rudely awakened by the alarm.
You stubble for the curtains to let the dim morning light stream in, yes ..... the toilet and the jug on for coffee. After taking a quick shower, and if you’re lucky you grab a couple of Weetbix for breakfast before going to work.
On the way to and from the office, you endure the rush hour traffic. At work, you face tons of deadlines, things to do, your perpetually demanding boss and worse, office politics. Things are nearly the same at home bills need to be paid; the laundry needs to be taken care of, errands to run.'
The question is what sort of stress relief is available .... Most people turn to three primary ways to reduce stress and stay healthy!
1. Massage! A relaxing massage to free up all the tension.
2. Exercise! Stretch your body and release those endorphins! Living more in your body will deepen your day to day experience and increase the quality of your life and your sense of well being.
3. Have fun! Don't forget how wonderful it feels to laugh. Have fun with what ever you're doing.
Have you ever considered sailing for stress relief? Consider these facts!!
“It is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears.
We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea … whether it is to sail or to watch it ..... we are going back from whence we came.”
John F Kennedy 14-9-62

That is a really interesting fact ... and here’s another.... Did you know there is a statistic out that the smell of saltwater decreases stress by 17%! Yes that’s right ... not sure where the percentage comes from though.... curious???
I also read that doctors have said that saltwater is good for allergies; this may be due to the lack of pollen and dust out at sea and a
cleaner natural environment.
One thing I know for sure as far as stress relief goes when you throw off the ropes that hold you to land, you seem to throw all the stress off too.
There are other things to take care of and occupy your mind which replace the challenges of today’s world, and the air is cleaner, fresher ... the wind in your face and the soothing sounds of water on the bow caress your senses gently.
The sound of the ocean, dolphins and waves and the calls of birds are the sounds used for meditation and massage to promote stress relief and total relaxation.

Just the act of sailing, hoisting sails and trimming them, balancing on a moving platform is a gentle form of
exercise.
It’s fun too ... so that takes care of two ways people use for stress relief. And you gain a
healthy appetite
... far, far from the nearest fast food outlet.
And activities that go along with sailing ... swimming, diving exploring beach and rainforests are food for the soul!
Yes a massage is great ..... But one sailor tells it this way; “Sailing produces a Zen-like experience that is more expansive in nature.
The Greeks had a word for this – eudemonia – which literally translates into "human spirit". People who have seen me sailing have described it as "a ballet" or as being
"one with the boat".
Sailing produces a clearing effect which opens my mind and spirit in a way that nothing else does. I love it!”
So it seams if people take up sailing, and therefore reduce stress levels, their personal and professional lives will benefit and they’ll reap the advantages of a healthier and happier life style.
So if you’re not already out on the water, and you need some stress relief it’s time to learn to sail. And a few added benefits will be you will have learned some great skills, met some good people and have had fun at the same time!
If you are not already a sailor ... learn to sail for stress relief and fun?
