Yacht Charters … For Sailing Holidays!

Yacht charters! Why would you?

Bareboat charters and crewed charters, which?

How many people do you need? And what is it going to cost?

• What qualifications do you need?

Where in the world can you go?

So you have your own yacht, sail your home waters often and you have a few weeks or more off work. You fancy a sailing holiday but you would love a change of scenery.

These are circumstance when yacht charters are well worth considering. Most countries have a favorite sailing ground which is a few hours flight away.

Or if you really want a change of scenery and culture there are cheap flights to other countries where you can experience a sailing holiday adventure in one of your dream destinations. Think about it …. Have you some place in mind?

There are two main ways you can charter a yacht, bareboat charters or crewed charters. What is the difference?

Crewed charters … are typically two to three days and nights offering accommodation from bunks to luxury yacht charters.

They are fully catered and crewed and along with sailing offer snorkel and dive destinations, different islands and beautiful beaches.

If you are not a confident sailor and you don’t have the time, or want to explore ashore as well, this might be for you.

Bareboat charters … If you’re a sailor then this is the best way to go in my humble opinion! Why? Because you have the freedom to cruise where you want, with in reason, and you have your privacy.

Drop anchor, go snorkeling or scuba diving at a whim, you call the shots as long as you keep within a few guide lines of the charter companies. They are fully self contained 3 to 5 star yachts designed for a sailing charter. And you go at your own pace!

Can you go on your own? Not really … then there’s the cost! But how many people do you need? There are 2 berth yachts to luxury yacht charters with 12 or more berths.

Get a group of friends together or all the family for some real bonding, fun and adventure. Or if you have a partner what could be better for a romantic escape, champagne on the deck as the sun goes down over a tropical island.

Or if you belong to a club, or may be a work crowd you can make it a team building sail. Corporate events and even weddings can be held on board.

What qualifications do you need? This might vary from country to country so it’s wise to check first.

In Australia the main charter companies say ‘no boat license required’ but I would say some sailing experience is definitely recommended.

I know in the Whitsundays yachties turn on their VHF radio for a bit of a comedy hour, listening to some of the more inexperienced ones having a few dramas.

Where in the world can you get yacht charters? Are you kidding!

Name any dream destination, places that will take your breath away, with the most exhilarating sailing, amazing tropical islands, scenic wonderlands and areas full of culture and history, places like Puerto Vallarta and you will most likely find a company that charters yachts from the basic to a luxury yacht charter.

All this does not come cheap! That is why most of us will take our own yachts or jump aboard a friends.

In Australia on average on a Beneteau 323 monohull with a maximum of 6 people on board for 5 – 7 nights it will cost $2250 and for a bigger yacht for 8 people $3600 for the same time period. These are starting costs for bare boating.

The advantage is sharing that cost and flying to your ultimate sailing destination on limited time and having sailing holidays of a lifetime!
